10 Tips for Tooth Extraction Aftercare

You might have thought that your adult teeth will last you a lifetime just because people call them permanent teeth, but that is not always the case. You might have to say goodbye to your pearly whites at some point in your life. The dentists will perform a tooth extraction when the tooth isn’t pearly white anymore and has decayed to the extent where saving it is not possible anymore.

They may even pull out a tooth because it may cause an infection in the rest of your mouth, which is especially dangerous for people going through chemotherapy or organ transplant. Other reasons may be purely cosmetic. Your mouth may be overcrowded, and the dentist may have to pull out a few teeth because they cannot grow due to the overcrowding.

Before pulling the tooth out, the dentist will inject some local anesthesia in the area that needs to undergo treatment. It will make the gum numb so that you do not feel a lot of pain.

If more than one tooth needs a removal, the dentist may opt for general anesthesia that will put you to sleep, and you will not feel a thing. Before the actual extraction, you have to tell the dentists about any conditions that you may have. If you are prone to infections, you may need to take antibiotics before and after the surgery.

10 Tooth Extraction Aftercare Tips

After tooth extraction has taken place, you need to take extra special care as complications can develop if you don’t take care of them properly. To avoid any complications, you should

  1. Place an ice pack on the affected area to keep the swelling down. Apply it right after the surgery and keep it there for periods of ten minutes.
  2. Clot formation is crucial, which is why you need to place special attention to the gauze. Lightly bite down on the gauze to stop the bleeding and if there is too much blood on it, replace it with a new one.
  3. Leave the gauze in place for three to four hours after the surgery to make sure the clot forms.
  4. Do not forget to take your prescribed medicine on time.
  5. Do not smoke as it is bad for the healing process.
  6. The clot can get dislodged due to many reasons, and you must avoid it at all costs, which is why you should not swish water or spit it out forcefully. Also, avoid using a straw as the pressure can harm the clot formation.
  7. Rinse your mouth with a solution made of salt and water after 24 hours of the surgery. Mix half a teaspoon of salt with eight ounces of warm water.
  8. Do not eat any solid food for the initial period. Choose soft foods like yogurt or pudding and gradually move to harder things as your mouth heals.
  9. Do not stop brushing or flossing your teeth but be sure to avoid the affected area as it can help avoid infection.
  10. Call your doctor if you feel fever, chills, nausea, and vomiting or if you feel chest pains, shortness of breath and coughs.
