Professional Cleaning – Should you have your teeth professionally cleaned?
During your day, saliva is constantly circulating in your mouth. In doing so, it also circulates calcium and other substances that helps protect and strengthen your teeth. The problem is that over time, those same substances can cause calcium deposits that can make and make your teeth look spotted. This build up, called tartar, over time becomes the perfect environment for bacteria to grow next to your gums.
Sometimes tartar can look brown or black, and in those cases, people are more likely to notice them and know they have a problem. But sometimes, tartar can also be tooth colored and not visible to you at all, and in those cases, you really need a dentist with specialized tools and training in order to clean your teeth and remove the plaque and tartar build up.
Active Dental, along with the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), recommend that you get your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year in addition to your daily hygiene habits of brushing and flossing. Maintaining a healthy mouth is paramount to your overall health.
What does a professional cleaning involve?
A professional teeth cleaning, also called a prophylaxis, generally includes:
- Removing tartar and plaque build up
- Applying fluoride
Depending on how it has been since your last cleaning and how much plaque and tartar build up there is, a cleaning will take around 30 to 60 minutes. In most cases, specially if the cleaning was done correctly, it should not hurt. You may feel some tickling and some vibrations from the special tools along with some pressure and scraping but there should be no pain. If you feel discomfort, it may be an indication of exposed dentin or sore gum tissues. If this occurs, let your dentist or hygienist know.
If you havent had a cleaning in a while, call your dentist ASAP! Most insurance plans cover 1 to 2 cleanings a year without any cost to you. Your smile matters, take charge of it!
