Give Teeth a Second Chance with Dental Crowns
A tooth cannot fix itself once it becomes weak due to damage or infection. However, when a tooth becomes too compromised to support the weight of your bite, a dental crown may be able to give the tooth a second chance. Dental crowns, named after the top part (or crown) of a tooth, are detailed replicas of healthy, natural teeth. A crown can be bonded over a tooth to protect its weak structure from your bite’s pressure, and to restore the tooth’s ability to function so you can avoid the need for tooth extraction.
When Dental Crowns Work Best
Depending on your needs, your dental crown can be made from lifelike materials, like porcelain or ceramic, or from more sturdy materials, such as metal. For the best of both worlds, Dr. Patel may recommend porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns, which combine the strength of metal with the esthetic value of dental porcelain.
Because they cover your tooth’s entire visible portion, dental crowns are often recommended for a variety of situations, including:
- Cracked/fractured teeth
- Teeth with one or more pieces broken off
- Misshapen teeth
- Teeth that are too small
- Teeth that have received large tooth fillings, or have undergone root canal therapy
- Severely stained or cosmetically blemished teeth
- Missing teeth (a crown can be placed on top of a dental implant to replace a lost tooth).
