Comfortable Periodontal Care
Periodontal disease, or gum disease, develops silently. Unlike a cavity, which can make your tooth sensitive in its earliest stages, gingivitis (early gum disease) won’t cause discomfort at first. It may, however, cause your gums to become swollen, develop a dark red hue, and occasionally bleed when you brush and floss your teeth. Gingivitis begins when oral bacteria gather along your gum line and work their way underneath your gums. The infection can spread through your gums, leading to gum disease development and the potential destruction of your gums and underlying jawbone.
Periodontal cleaning is a more involved form of professional dental cleaning, and describes your dentist removing bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth roots, under your gums. Also called scaling and root planing, the procedure entails smoothing your teeth’s roots after they’ve been cleaned to reduce the risk of future bacteria build up. Because scaling and root planing are more detailed than regular dental cleaning, you may need to attend more than one visit to complete treatment.
In cases where periodontal disease has grown severe, Dr. Patel can refer patients to a trusted periodontal specialist for more complex expert treatment. If gum disease has caused you to lose one or more teeth, then we’ll work with you to select an appropriate dental prosthetic to replace them as part of your treatment.
